At the moment, the life insurance industry sets its own rules. The partial moratorium that the industry introduced in 2019 doesn't go far enough to stop genetic discrimination.
The final report of a research study led by Monash University recommended that the Australian Government should ban life insurers from using genetic test results to discriminate. Read the report here.

Right now, the Australian Government is considering recommendations to ban genetic discrimination in life insurance. On 4/9/23, a motion about this issue was introduced to Parliament by Josh Burns MP, Chair, Human Rights Committee.
